Emotional Intelligence: A History

"Emotions are a critical source of Information for Learning"
- Joseph Ledoux

History of Emotional Intelligence

One could argue that Plato's quote, "All learning has an emotional component", signaled the beginning of the study of Emotional Intelligence roughly 2,000 years ago. However, Emotional Intelligence, as a sort of "intelligence" that can be tested scientifically, dates back to a landmark paper written by two researchers, Peter Salavoy and John Mayer, published in 1990. Daniel Goleman made it widely known in his 1995 book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Goleman (1998) defined Emotional Intelligence as 'the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships."  1

There are several models of Emotional Intelligence. We will be covering Daniel Goleman's Model below:

Daniel Goleman's Model

Self-Awareness: It's about knowing ourselves and our feelings, so we can, in turn, know others'.

Self-Regulation: It's about regulating, recognizing, and managing our emotions so they do more good than harm.

Self-Motivation: It's about directing our emotions' power towards a purpose that will motivate and inspire us.

Empathy: It's about the ability to see from another person's perspective.

Effective Relationships: It's about interacting with people successfully.
