The Right Mindset Makes a World of Difference

The human brain is constantly changing and evolving, contrary to what science initially claimed: that it stops growing in childhood. Our "software" can be updated through learning since many different brain regions react to experiences.

Despite the neurobiological facts, some individuals still believe you are limited to the skills and "smarts" you were born with. Carol Dweck, a Stanford University psychologist, first investigated the concept of fixed and development mindsets. In her crucial work, Dr. Dweck outlined the two basic ways that individuals categorize intelligence:

  • A fixed mindset that believes people's intelligence to be fixed and static
  • A growth mentality that believes intelligence and talents can be developed with work and education

The Right Mindset Makes a World of Difference

The usual belief of those with a fixed mindset is that their level of intelligence and skills are innate. Fixed mentality individuals, in Dr. Dweck's own words, "have a certain level [of intelligence] and that's that, and then their objective becomes to look clever all the time and never look dumb."

But adopting the right mindset is essential for learning. We cannot learn without accepting failure and learning from it. Hence, the importance of adopting the right mindset allows growth, inner expansion, and learning.
