What is a Resilient Organization?

Successful businesses all have well-established routines for getting things done. It doesn't matter if the activity is as high as purchasing a competitor or as mundane as filling out a timesheet; if you look attentively, you'll discover a solid technique to assist you through it. During moments of stability, these routines are often taken for granted. On the other hand, they tend to fail when a corporation is dealing with a lot of uncertainty or needs to react rapidly in a crisis.

Organizations scramble to make modifications on the fly—with various degrees of success. It's a good idea to spend some time before the next crisis thinking systematically about the granular nuts-and-bolts methods you use—and experimenting with alternatives.

Because once a crisis hits, your organization will be under a considerable test, and it either makes or breaks it. While this seems like an easy statement, however, saying it is much easier than the consequence of "breaking" under crisis. Hence survival in crisis mode requires lots of resilience.

Organizational resilience is defined as the "capacity of an organization to absorb and adapt in a changing environment to enable it to accomplish its objectives and to survive and prosper," according to ISO 22316, Organizational Resilience - Principals and Attributes.2

More resilient businesses can anticipate and respond to threats and opportunities from rapid or gradual changes in their internal and external settings.

Leadership behavior is anchored in an organization's awareness of itself and its relationships with others and is a critical contributor to how it implements organizational resilience techniques. Top management must take responsibility for the organization's resilience capability, governance, and accountability.
