Why is Emotional Intelligence Valued in the Workplace?

Why is emotional intelligence such a sought-after quality in the workplace? Nearly 75% of hiring managers who responded to a poll said they valued an employee's Emotional Intelligence over their IQ.

It is commonly acknowledged that having Emotional Intelligence is a desirable skill that can enhance relationships, management, and problem-solving in the workplace. Researchers also think training and practice can help one improve at this skill.

It's time to ponder where your emotional intelligence level is. When it comes to today's workforce, you must ensure you're on the high Emotional Intelligence side of the spectrum.

1. You are on an airplane that suddenly hits extremely bad turbulence and starts to rock from side to side. What do you do?

  1. Continue reading your book or watching the movie, trying to pay little attention to the turbulence.
  2. Be vigilant to an emergency, carefully monitoring the flight attendants and reading the emergency instructions card.

2. You are in a meeting where a colleague takes credit for your work. What do you do?

  1. Immediately and publicly confront the colleague over the ownership of your work.
  2. After the meeting, take the colleague aside and tell her that you would appreciate it if she credits you when speaking about your work in the future.
  3. Nothing. It's not a good idea to embarrass a colleague in public.
  4. After the colleague speaks publicly, thank her for referencing your work and give the group more specific details about your work and what you were trying to accomplish.

3. You are a customer service representative and have just gotten an extremely angry client on the phone. What do you do?

  1. Hang-up. It doesn't pay to take abuse from anyone.
  2. Listen to the client and rephrase what you gather he is feeling.
  3. Explain to the client that he is being unfair, that you are only trying to do your job, and that you would appreciate it if he wouldn't get in the way of this.
  4. Tell the client you understand how frustrating this must be for him, and offer a specific thing you can do to help him get his problem solved.
